Tandem Health, a startup that develops a clinician copilot to help practitioners with important tasks and reduce the administrative burden across healthcare specialities, has closed a Seed round of $9.5 million. The investment round was led by global VC firm Northzone, with the participation of angel operators from OpenAI & DeepMind, the founder of Capio, and healthcare VC Amino Collective.
Tandem Health's clinician copilot leverages the latest AI developments to support clinicians in their administrative work, enabling them to spend more time providing care instead of documentation. The recent advancements in LLMs have fundamentally shifted tech capabilities, automating a lot of tasks along the way. Tandem Health's “clinician copilot” ensures the healthcare sector can take advantage of these developments, both now and as the technology continues to evolve. The copilot works seamlessly with the complexity of the fragmented European healthcare market. Their system is highly configurable for different languages, medical contexts, and can be easily integrated with any electronic health record system.
Currently, 3% of global GDP is spent on admin in healthcare, and 9 out of 10 clinicians report they are unable to complete their administrative tasks during ordinary working hours. Simultaneously, healthcare costs are rising every year with an ageing population and a significant deficit of clinicians. While some actors are beginning to address this problem in the US, the European market presents its unique challenges such as diverse languages, varying clinical methodologies, and hundreds of different electronic health record systems to integrate with.
"Historically, digitization in healthcare has increased the amount of administrative work for clinicians as reporting requirements increased. Now, recent AI developments enable technological solutions that can transform and greatly improve the clinician workflow. As we roll out Tandem, we hear groundbreaking stories on how much time is saved by practitioners after each patient visit. We are incredibly excited to now further accelerate our growth across Europe," says Lukas Saari, Tandem Health's Co-Founder and CEO.
“I immediately recognized the immense value in what Tandem Health is building when I saw their product. It fits all the criteria of what I as a hospital director am searching for - truly moving the needle in terms of productivity, being applicable across medical specialties and occupational groups, and being simple to start using.” says Björn Zoega, former CEO of Karolinska University Hospital, and medical advisor to Tandem Health.
"We are thrilled to partner with the team and believe they have a unique combination of tech and healthcare expertise, with a deep Europe-wide industry network. Today, clinicians spend a significant amount of time on administrative tasks, and we have rarely seen such rapid tech adoption within the healthcare space as with AI copilots. With the US having experienced massive growth in the space over the past year, we feel that Europe will see a similar explosion. Tandem is well positioned to become a category-defining player in the European healthtech space, with their clinician AI copilot that has the potential to revolutionise healthcare" adds Pär-Jörgen Pärson, Partner at Northzone, who is also joining the board.
Tandem Health will continue to rapidly expand across Europe, and will use the funds to accelerate their growth towards becoming the leading clinician copilot on the continent.
