About Rheumazentrum Mittelhessen
Rheumazentrum Mittelhessen (RZMH) is a specialist rheumatology centre in Mittelhessen, Germany. The team sees rheumatology patients across outpatient consultations, ward rounds, and examinations. Tandem started with one clinician and, within weeks, had spread to the full team of more than ten colleagues.
The challenge: documentation that never stayed in the room
At RZMH, outpatient consultations run in quarter-hour slots. Before Tandem, the real documentation work started once the patient had left. Clinicians rebuilt conversations from memory, typed between appointments, and carried unfinished notes into the evening. That admin tail cost time and energy.
For Dr. Laura Schotte, Specialist in Internal Medicine at RZMH, the shift shows up most clearly at the end of the day:
“Because I don't have to re-document and track the whole patient conversation afterwards. I'm actually less exhausted at the end of the day.”
How Tandem fits into the rheumatology workflow
Tandem listens during the consultation. The clinician carries out the visit as normal and a structured note appears on screen. After a quick review, a single click sends the note into the practice management system (PVS) or hospital information system (KIS). The same applies on ward rounds and during examinations. No dictation stage, no typing between patients, no after-hours rework.
The practice didn't need a big rollout plan. One clinician started. Colleagues watched, asked, and signed up. Tandem spread through RZMH by word of mouth.
Hannah Trenk, RZMH's Managing Director, sums up how Tandem has landed with the team:
“Tandem fits right into our daily processes. It runs so smoothly and so quietly in the background that you just say: okay, I can focus on the patient, I can do what I'm actually here for, and I don't have to worry about documentation anymore.”
The results at RZMH
In outpatient clinics, RZMH saves five minutes per consultation. On a 15-minute slot, that's roughly a third of the appointment returned. Ward rounds and examination documentation have become "significantly more pleasant," and clinicians leave the day less drained.
Dr. Schotte breaks down where the minutes come back:
“Ward rounds, or the documentation of examinations, have become significantly more pleasant. When we go into outpatient care, into consultations, I actually gain time. I need five minutes less per patient, which in a quarter of an hour is already a lot of time.”
What patients notice
The most striking feedback at RZMH didn't come from a clinician. It came from a patient.
Trenk remembers one piece of feedback in particular:
“You're in conversation with the patient and you can rely on the fact that everything the patient says is really structured and prepared to a high standard. The most recent piece of feedback came from a patient who said: I've never felt so taken seriously. I've never felt so seen as a whole person.”
Why it works
Tandem is built for European healthcare from the ground up. It's CE marked under the European Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR) and certified to ISO 27001 and ISO 13485. No audio is stored. Nothing enters the medical record without the clinician's approval. Patient data is never used to train AI models. Tandem integrates with more than 100 medical record systems across Europe and is supported by a team of clinicians who know the reality of a specialist practice at first hand.
