European healthcare needs independence. Meet Sovereign Health by Tandem

Today we're launching Sovereign Health, in partnership with Scaleway, the European cloud and AI provider of the iliad Group. It's the same Tandem, with the same three products and the same integrations with more than 130 medical record systems. What changes is that care providers can now run our Medical Assistant on European-owned cloud.

Why sovereignty matters in healthcare

European law rightly treats healthcare as critical infrastructure, and patient records as the most strictly protected category of personal data there is. As AI moves into everyday clinical work, who controls the infrastructure underneath it matters more than ever. That’s why we’ve launched Sovereign Health.

So much of clinical AI in Europe runs on infrastructure owned by global hyperscalers. Keeping data in an EU region has become the standard answer, and it's an important one, but data residency only tells you where the servers sit. Data sovereignty goes one step further, and depends on who owns the provider, and which jurisdiction it answers to. Now that European cloud can match the performance and security that clinical software demands, we’re offering it to our customers.

What is Sovereign Health

Sovereign Health lets care providers run Tandem’s Medical Assistant on European-owned cloud, powered by Scaleway. Patient data is stored there, and notes are generated by open-weight AI models that we host and run ourselves, so patient data is never shared with the companies that built them.

Every model is validated before customers use it, and each of our three products remains CE marked under EU MDR as a Class IIa medical device.

Clinically safe and without compromise on open-weight models

We tested open-weight models against leading frontier models, measuring how often a note includes something that wasn't said, and how often it leaves out something clinically important. Run through Tandem, open-weight models performed in line with frontier models on both. You can see the full results on our Sovereign Health page.

Taking it one step further

Every Tandem customer already gets European hosting, encryption and certified clinical safety, and that hasn't changed. Sovereign Health simply goes one step further, with a cloud provider that's both owned and operated in Europe.

It's also the first public step towards a much larger commitment for our company. Backed by $100 million in Series B funding from the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, we're building European clinical AI with European capital, and it can now run on European infrastructure too.
